you & me vol.1 - a collection of live duets

NEW ALBUM FROM LIZ FRENCHAM AND FRIENDS

Everybody wants to play with Liz Frencham, and now 15 more fabulous musicians have.

Late 2007 Liz approached a group of friends and heroes-who-would-become-friends (including internationally renowned performer Kristina Olsen) with a concept for a duet album with a difference.

One room, two musicians.  All live.

From the opening notes, you & me vol.1 stands out as an album that will soon become your best friend.

Capturing the theme of the live duets album, the heartwarming opening track is a co-write with the delightful Rebecca Wright.

"This wasn't just a case of ok, you sing the first verse, I'll sing the second verse," explains Liz, "As much as possible we worked closely together on arrangements, harmonies, and the best way we could deliver a really personal performance that encapsulated the theme of the song and the album."
Featuring an eclectic collection of standards & the occasional cover, the album also reveals new Frencham originals, showcasing Liz's fine talents not only as a singer and double bassist, but as a songwriter in her own right. The exquisite emptiness of her latest song "Black Rover" compels you to listen to every word.

The friendship and respect the musicians hold for each other is obvious, along with those unique moments of humour and spontaneity only a live recording can bring life to.  It can be difficult to capture that live vibe, but engineer Steve Vella, of Dog & Bear Studios, has done a wonderful job of bringing Liz and her talented friends right into your living room.

Highlights include a divine "Paper Moon" with Mic Conway and ukulele, and a classy "God Bless the Child" with New Zealand singer Gilly Darbey.

Melbourne trumpeter and vocalist, the very cheeky, heart meltingly-smooth Vincent Bradley, absolutely sizzles through the speakers on "Baby It's Cold Outside".  It is simply one of those songs where you get more and more with every listen.  Kristina Olsen and Liz's "Black Coffee" is about as powerful as two voices in one room will ever sound.

Other standouts include "Ruby" with National Bluegrass Guitar Champ Robbie Long, a unique performance of Suzanne Vega's "The Queen & the Soldier" with festival circuit legend Martin Pearson, and introducing PJ Wolf who duets with Liz on his haunting original, "Square One". Of course there is the now traditional secret bonus track...recorded in the bath...!

Liz admits it's been a learning process.  "I've always avoided playing double bass and singing simultaneously in the studio, because it's just plain hard to get it all technically correct. I have, however, overcome my fear throughout the progression of the album & learned to embrace the aliveness of the experience. It's the only way to get that elusive sense of connection that people can hear in a live performance."

Liz Frencham's breathy late night voice, reinforced by her strong but subtle sultry bass, makes this album perfect to have around on late nights and Sunday mornings. Or anytime you need a friend. You'll find many on you & me.

you & me was launched officially at the National Folk Festival in Canberra on Easter Saturday to an overflowing Troubadour Wine bar. The album sold out before the end of the festival.

Watch out for the you & me vol.1 tour at a venue near you in June.
